Successful Mutton Bird Season Concludes with Major Rescue Efforts in Coffs Coast
Coffs Harbour, NSW – The Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary, in collaboration with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS), proudly announces the successful conclusion of this year’s mutton bird migration season.
Wedge-tailed Shearwaters (aka mutton birds) nest on Muttonbird Island at Coffs Harbour and each autumn migrate to the South China Sea. The birds leave at night and need a strong breeze to help them take off. Fledglings their very first trip can be disoriented by urban lighting and if they land in the street or backyard are not able to take off again. Here they are at risk from cars and domestic dogs, cats or feral predators such as foxes.
This year, dedicated rescue efforts have saved more than 60 mutton birds that were led off course from their migration by the distracting lights on land.
The rescue mission, a remarkable community effort, saw numerous volunteers dedicating their time and energy to training and accreditation programs, enabling them to proficiently patrol the jetty area and deliver the rescued birds to the Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary Rescue Unit.
Glenn Storrie Coffs Coast Area Manager from National Parks expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, “We extend our deepest thanks to all the volunteers who have shown unwavering commitment. Their multiple hours of patrolling and rescuing mutton birds have been invaluable. Their dedication ensures these vulnerable birds are given a second chance.”
Furthermore, we salute the WIRES and Sanctuary volunteers who not only support the mutton birds but also care for their territory on our island, maintaining it as a safe haven for nesting and respite.
Tiga Cross of the Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary emphasised the critical nature of this work, saying, “At the Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary, we stand as guardians of these vulnerable creatures.
“With unwavering dedication, our team works tirelessly to rescue, rehabilitate, and release mutton birds that have fallen victim to the perils of light pollution. Every day, we witness their resilience and spirit as they recover under our care and their strength restored.
“We are grateful to the volunteers and staff at the Sanctuary, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services and WIRES for their ongoing commitment to protecting our wildlife.”
The Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary, NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services and WIRES look forward to continuing their vital work in safeguarding the natural heritage and ensuring the survival of these endangered birds.
Muttonbird Island, located at the end the northern break wall, is also a Nature Reserve. People can help mutton birds by keeping to the foot path on the Island and reporting any birds they may find to the Coffs Coast Wildlife Sanctuary, keep their pets under control at all times. Do not attempt to release birds as a special technique is required to get these safely airborne. Volunteers are always welcome. Contact the Sanctuary or the NPWS to register your interest.
